Title: Meeting Lancer
Fandom: It's DaHTa. No, I make no monies.
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Dan talks

Heres Tanarill stared at Lancer. Lancer stared at Heres Tanarill. Eska watched them both, despite the fact that she didn’t have eyes, and waited for them to finish their staring contest.

Witches, in contest, have been known to outstare the sun for hours on end.

When it became apparent that this was going to be that kind of match, Eska sighed and raised the Land.

It was something that, for reasons unknown to anybody but Eska and her fellow sheva’Shen, no one but properly bound sheva’Shen k’Shitame could do on a small scale. Everyone else did it on a huge scale, a country-sized scale, or not at all. But Eksa raised the Land in a twenty-foot sphere about her, confining it to that small region with no apparent difficulty despite the fact that the rest of the land wanted to be raised.

Both witches, and Dan, turned their heads sharply to look at her. Raising the Land was, after all, the magical equivalent of pressing a reset button, and was always noticeable.

“Children,” she said acidly, “we don’t have time for this. Play status games later, if you want. Right now we have more pressing problems.”

“What the fuck did you just do?” asked Dan at the same time as Lancer, who hadn’t been aware that Eska was anything more than an exceptional athame, said, “Soulsteel?”

“sheva’Shen. Soulsteel is a good enough approximation, though we make ourselves in quite a different way.” Eska paused and then added, “What kind of magic do you use?”

Lancer shrugged. “A kind that works.”

“He’s a blood mage,” growled Heres Tanarill, still on the warpath.

There was pause, a very studious pause, before Eska responded. “No, he isn’t. Blood mages don’t sacrifice themselves, and whatever else he does, this one sacrifi-”

“What did you do?” broke in Dan.

“Why does it matter?” shot back Heres Tanarill.

“She did something that twisted everything right,” said Dan, “and I think I could do it too but only if somebody teaches me how to do it.”

“She raised the Land,” said Lancer quietly. “Don’t attempt it. Please.”

“O-kay. Now someone explain what he said to me.”

Heres Tanarill sighed the long-suffering sigh of someone who explained this far too much, even if she didn’t do it often. “She reset magic, all magic, in the area. That’s what raising the Land does. I don’t know if this world could survive if you were able to do it too, so I’m not telling you how.” She didn’t mention that she was one of the people who could only do it on a huge scale or not at all.

“This world could use it,” muse Eska, “but now is not the time. There is a threat coming. Heres will be using herself to weaken it, and will be very much reduced in the process. Dan has agreed to help fight, but even with him, we lack the powerful battle magics and the sheva’Suul we’d need to really carry it. Dan has informed us that you are a witch, and I can feel that you’re quite powerful when you allow yourself to be. We need power, a lot of it. Will you help us?”

Lancer surprised no one when he asked, “What do I get?”

“What do you want?” asked Heres Tanarill.

“Facts. Knowledge. You to stop tapping whatever power you’re tapping, it’s giving me a headache.” Lancer looked up in relief as Heres Tanarill cut her draw on Walker power. Then he leaned forward. “Maybe access to that power?”

“No.” And that was that.

“Then a long conversation with-what is your name, good sword?”

Dan rolled his eyes as Eska recited, “Eska i’Hitmé i’Dinya a’Kreen a’Issul i’Tanak a’Litun kal’Edrin sheva’Natn sheva’Naal sheva’Suul sheva’Shen k’Shitame. You may call me Eska.”

“A long conversation with Eska, then.”

“Eska?”

“Yes. But later. We have work to do.”

And also, I should do homeworks and finals but I am not going to tonight :P

Week after next, RL meetings may take place with Rags. Rags, where are you?
