Today is the ninth day of the Omer, which is one week and two days into the Omer.

Now that's I've decided to quit Judaism, I have the oddest desire to spread it around. Which is to say, I'm going to share random and useless bits of Judaism with you.


The Hebrew alphabet has twenty-four letters. We don't have a j, but we do have a letter for sh, and letter for kh (pronounced as the ch in Scottish loch), and two letters that make no sound at all.

Each letter is assigned a numerical value. First letter=1, second letter=2, and so on. At ten, you start going up by tens: tenth letter=10, eleventh letter=20, up to the twentieth letter, which is worth a hundred, and then you go up by hundreds. The last letter of the alphabet is worth four hundred, a consolation prize for being last, I guess.

The Hebrew word for life, khai, is spelled with two letters, khet and yud. Khet has a numerical value of 8; yud has a numerical value of ten. Thus, khai=18. So giving someone a gift of 18 anything is like giving them a one-up on lives, above and beyond the value of whatever it was you gave them. This is why Jews give each other gifts of $18 or $36. IT has nothing to do with the money.

Dan had never had a childhood. He had . . . memories, kind of, of two childhoods. Or of one childhood and one pre-young-adult time. He could remember some of the memories being happy, of knowing that at one point things like Easter eggs hunts and arguing with his sister had been nice. He didn’t seem to have the ability to feel that way anymore, as if it were a knack that he’d lost at some point. He was fairly sure he could put his finger down on that point.

Beside him, Danny stirred restlessly in his sleep.

But lately, he’d been getting flashes. Flashes of what, he wasn’t quite sure. Flashes, anyway, while he and Danny repeated an argument they’d had so many times by now that it was as much ritual as easy-natured fight. When he pinned Danny to the bed and tickled him senseless. During late-night B-movie marathons, when, stuffed with popcorn and candy and other such junk and he was just coming down off the high, he was able to put his head in Danny’s lap not have to worry that he’d wake up in a warm tangle on the floor, all awkward angles and cramps in odd places.

Danny thrashed a bit, perhaps having a nightmare of Dan’s second appearance in his life. Dan put an arm around him, and immediately the younger ghost stilled, cuddling against him and clinging as if to a life raft. Perhaps he was.

Danny was so different like this, all soft curves and whiteness, nothing like Dan. He knew he had not done anything to deserve him, had done a lot that could be considered the opposite of “deserve him,” and for some odd reason Danny had looked at his tormentor and chosen him, even though he couldn’t possibly have chosen anyone worse.

Still asleep, Danny thrashed again. Dan stroked his hair–hardly ever black, not anymore–and pressed a cooling kiss to his lover’s forehead.

He might not have a childhood, but he was learning what he needed to know; and this time, once he had it, he was never going to let it go again.

"Second appearance" made me go "Hmmmm?" but when I got to the next sentence, I melted into a pile of happy goo. The imagery is very shinypretty and makes me really see this whole thing so much more. ^^ Kudos!

Little details like "cooling kiss" makes this oh so much more wonderful to me. And "hardly ever black, not anymore" made me squee. Yet, should not have surprised me XDD

I was thinking more like the waffles thing. Or like, my father and I occasionally have debates over whether or not a bantam is a good high school mascot. (I say no, it's a bloody chicken!) But it's not the kind of argument you have to reach a resolution, it's the kind of argument you have because you've had it so many times that it's comforting, in back-to-front kind of way.

A really bad horror movie from the era of drive-in theaters. Like The Creature from the Black Lagoon. They're not so much scary as funny, in a morbid rocks-fall-everybody-dies way.

Yes, and also the fact that he never lived through the death of his family. Danny is somewhat older in this fic, old enough to live off on his own and not have his parents worry too much as long as they get the occasional email. But Dan will always be ten years older than he is.
