He’d had to fly them both there, because Heres Tanarill couldn’t–

–so now they were sitting on a disused rock in a far corner of the Ghost Zone, and trading secrets, in between blowing up other nearby rocks.

“Most embarrassing thing ever to happen to you,” she said.

“I don’t get embarrassed.” He sent and ectoblast at a random hunk of rock, and watched with satisfaction as it became several hundred smaller rocks.

“No, you don’t, do you?” she said. “All right. Then what’s the worst thing that ever happened to you?”

“Toss up. Between getting created in the first place and having Freakshow die. Only Freakshow came back, so it’s not bad anymore.”

She blinked. “Created?” And then she did that weird stare thing and reality twisted a bit and when it settled there was an expanding dust cloud where a moment before there had been a smallish asteroid.

“I was two people. Who got fused together, sort of. It made me fucking insane for a long time, and it got worse when Faux arrived.”

“Faux being the demon from your mind?”

“Yes.”

“You manifested him and you found the strength to defeat him?”

Dan shrugged uncomfortably, and the blast that hit the next rock was quite a bit stringer than was strictly necessary. “He killed my Freakshow. He deserved it. I thought I’d lost Freakshow, before he came back for me.”

“Someone walked into Death for you?”

“No, he came back from death.”

“That’s even harder. I mean, I’m a Walker and I wouldn’t attempt that, although the demon in my heart certainly would. This Freakshow did it for you.” She concentrated again, there was another ripple, and another large rock turned into dust particles. “And you can love him back, no holds barred. You’re very lucky.”

“I know.”


That happened pretty much right after Getting to Know You. Dan doesn't yet know that Rill has Issues with the demon in her heart, and he's not really paying any attention in any case. But Pas, because she's Pas, is. She also noticed the other thing that Rill just let slip, which is important later on.
