Is kind of weird this year. UCSB has a (not undeserved) reputation for being a party school, and Halloween is kind of an excuse to party. But because Halloween falls smack in the middle of the week this time, "Halloween Weekend" was last weekend, and this week has been quiet. This is in comparison to a vastly increased crime rate over Halloween in years past.

But that is really not the point of this post. Today, because we are a liberal West-coast campus, people are allowed and encouraged to dress up. So the professor for whom I TA, Dr. Sears, dressed up . . . as Charles Darwin. He made a poster with the standard progression of ape -> neanderthal -> cro-magnon -> modern human, plus an additional -> college student. This was amusing enough, but then.

This class is held in an auditorium. At the front/bottom, there are two sets of double-doors that lead to the maintenance tunnels. This room is sloped, not stepped, and is the only way to get a wheeled thing, like a cart, down into the tunnels. So a guy, who is presumably maintenance, comes in with a large rolling cart. He is dressed like Batman.

Dr. Sears (in character as Darwin): What manner of evolutionary offshoot are you?
Maintenance dude (in character as Nolan!Batman, complete with the voice): The Bat.
Everybody: [laughs]

In conclusion, I love my campus. :D

Hehehehe. That IS pretty awesome. I'm glad you had an amusing Halloween, if a quiet one. Any luck on a beta yet?
